TikTok to sue Trump over crackdown

Image
NEW YORK: Video app TikTok said on Saturday it will challenge in court a Trump administration crackdown on the popular Chinese-owned platform, which Washington accuses of being a national security threat. As tensions soar between the world’s two biggest economies, President Donald Trump signed an executive order on August 6 giving Americans 45 days to stop doing business with TikTok’s Chinese parent company ByteDance — effectively setting a deadline for a potential pressured sale of the app to a US company. “To ensure that the rule of law is not discarded and that our company and users are treated fairly, we have no choice but to challenge the executive order through the judicial system,” TikTok said in a statement. “Even though we strongly disagree with the administration’s concerns, for nearly a year we have sought to engage in good faith to provide a constructive solution,” it said. “What we encountered instead was a lack of due process as the administration paid no attention to f

Govt to use all means to bring back Nawaz: minister

ISLAMABAD: Federal Minister for Information Senator Shibli Faraz has announced that the government will utilise all legal means to bring back ex-premier Nawaz Sharif from London and he will not be allowed to evade the law on the pretext of a ‘fudged’ medical report. Senator Faraz said the opposition wanted changes to the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) laws to escape from the process of accountability in return for supporting the FATF bill. “But we will never bow down to such blackmailing,” he said while addressing a news conference at the Press Information Department (PID) on Friday. He also said the opposition parties would be responsible if the country was blacklisted by the FATF as they were resisting the required amendments to the laws. The government would not be blackmailed by the opposition parties “under any circumstances”, he vowed, adding that they would have to face the law for alleged corruption. According to him, the opposition demanded 35 amendments in NAB law for

BEIJING: Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday said his country was ready to work with Pakistan to deepen the building of “China-Pakistan Community of Shared Future” and to jointly promote cooperation among regional countries.

President Xi, in a letter to President Dr Arif Alvi, said both Pakistan and China were working to maintain the “momentum of peace and development in the region”. He said that since the outbreak of Covid-19, the global fight against coronavirus had proved that mutual support, solidarity and cooperation were the only way to defeat the pandemic. The Chinese president responded to a special letter of congratulations written by President Alvi on the second conference of the CPEC Political Parties Joint Consultation Mechanism which, he said, fully demonstrated the great importance and support he (Dr Alvi) rendered to China-Pakistan relations and CPEC. He said as a landmark project of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRl), CPEC was of great significance to the further development of the China-Pakistan All-Weather Strategic Cooperative Partnership and the building of a closer China-Pakistan Community of Shared Future. He said the political parties of China and Pakistan had carried out friendly co

JUNK FOOD

So what did you have for breakfast today? Was it egg, bread and milk or was it a parantha? Was it just milk, grains and fruits? Or just milk or fruit? I do not know your answer, but one thing I know is that every one of us has eaten something to fill our stomach and we need some food before going out for work or school. And it's a matter of choice that you fill your belly with. I am sure that we will not always start our day by ordering pizza, burgers, biryani etc. Am i right I think ha And these restaurants do not even start serving these dishes in the morning. Every restaurant has a morning menu if they start early and contain most of the items that we like to eat early in the morning, such as eggs and bread, hash brown potatoes. Grains and milk, poha, or light food such as idli and fruit salad, yogurt, they also give the option of parantha, but never pizza or burgers. Have you thought why? A pizza is nothing but a large part of white refined dough, in which all the dead are go

Secret talks and quiet ties — that’s what paved the way for last week’s deal between the United Arab Emirates and Israel to normalise relations. --- DAWN NEWS Updated 20 Aug 2020

Touted by US President Donald Trump as a major Mideast breakthrough, the agreement was in fact the culmination of more than a decade of quiet links rooted in frenzied opposition to Iran that predated Trump and even Barack Obama, as well as Trump’s avowed goal to undo his predecessor’s Middle East legacy. And the deal leaves behind what had been a cornerstone of US policy in the region: resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The effort to achieve that goal picked up speed 17 months ago at a US-led conference in Warsaw, according to officials involved. That February 2019 meeting, originally conceived as an anti-Iran gathering, morphed into a broader Mideast security endeavour after European objections to its agenda. Many countries opted not to send their top diplomats, and Russia, China and the Palestinians skipped it entirely. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attended, however, as did the foreign ministers of key Arab states. At the summit, diplomats from Saudi Arabi

South Korean coronavirus infections fan out nationwide from church cluster

Novel coronavirus infections have spread nationwide from a church in the South Korean capital, raising fears that one of the world’s virus mitigation success stories might yet suffer a disastrous outbreak, a top health official has said. According to  Reuters , the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) reported 288 new cases, marking a week of triple-digit daily increases, but offering a ray of hope in that there was no surge from the previous day’s tally of 297. The latest outbreak has been driven by hundreds of cases in a church run by a radical conservative preacher whose followers have also attended anti-government protests in central Seoul in recent weeks, seeding infections there too.

A 14,000-year-old puppy, whose perfectly preserved body was found in Russia, munched on a woolly rhino for its last meal

pdated 12:29 PM EDT, Mon August 17, 2020 (CNN) Scientists studying the body of a perfectly preserved Ice Age  puppy  have made an unexpected discovery -- a piece of what could be one of the last woolly rhinos inside its stomach. Russian researchers first excavated the preserved, furry body of the canine -- which could be a dog or a wolf -- from a site in Tumat, Siberia, in 2011. Inside the 14,000-year-old puppy's stomach was a hairy piece of tissue. At first, scientists assumed the fragment belonged to a cave lion, because of its fine yellow fur. But tests by experts at Stockholm's Natural History Museum told a different story. The preserved puppy was found in Tumat, Siberia.
